Cassette & Pen

One of the greatest love stories ever

I was one of those who were forced to listen albums from beginning to end, both because that’s how we did it in my day, and because when you’re used to dealing with a cassette, and maybe your tape deck wasn’t that great — rewind or/and fast forward button out of order —, you know, going from a song to another wasn’t an easy thing. That’s when a pen or a pencil became the only thing that mattered. Yes, because we are talking of days when music itself was the only thing that mattered.

Someone has spread some simple theories about this practice: people used to use pens because they usually fitted perfectly inside the tap holes since those pens had varying thicknesses, the second reason was that pens were objects that were easily found inside homes. It seems some people also used to do this trick just to play around knowing that they were changing the location of the pointer inside the cassette tape and so changing the song that was heard when the tape was played. Whatever your reason, without knowing it, by means of a pen and a cassette, you suddenly turned into some kind of a juggler. While your equipment stopped being simple objects, to become the protagonists of one of the greatest love stories ever.
