Contemporary Art

about the Contemporary Art world

I get the feeling that people from outside the world of contemporary art see it as deserving of mockery, in an emperor’s-new-clothes sort of way. I think that’s not right and that it’s just because they don’t understand the discourse. The art world is filled with vibrancy.

Rachel Kushner

How many times have you been puzzled by an artwork?
Contemporary art is a dynamic combination of materials, methods, concepts, and subjects produced in the second half of the 20th century or in the 21st century, by artists working in a globally influenced, culturally diverse, and technologically advancing world. But the mocking satire, which has always accompanied it, seems to highlight more a certain way to look at it, than its not always comprehensible discourse.

“It’s meaningless, lady, believe me—I painted it.”

The most important thing to keep in mind, whenever we deal with this kind of art, is that we have before us a conceptual figurative requiring not only an enjoyment on the aesthetic and perceptual level, but also a minimum of knowledge of the ideas and reflections on which it is based. So, if you’re not planning to look ridiculous with your snob ways, make sure you’re prepared, because, as Giacomo Leopardi said, “people are ridiculous only when they try or seem to be that which they are not.”

The concept was well told in L’ArtistaEl Artista, a brilliant film by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat, with Sergio Pángaro and Alberto Laiseca.
