What we used to be [Remix]

Just one last thought

They say “New year, new life,” but what’s happened to me so far is not so promising about something new. One new year’s eve, as I’m watching Trainspotting 2 — the scene where Renton explains to Veronika their revisited “Choose Life” philosophy — here’s yet another of those greetings messages they send to everybody with just one click.

“Choose an iPhone made in China by a woman who jumped out of a window and stick it in the pocket of your jacket fresh from a South-Asian Firetrap. Choose Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram and a thousand others ways to spew your bile across people you’ve never met. Choose updating your profile, tell the world what you had for breakfast and hope that someone, somewhere cares…”

For a moment I’ve even thought about sending a message back, to be part of that big virtual party, but then I remembered who I am, and where I come from. I was 18 and heard on the radio about this “Trainspotting” movie that was playing only at the Royal Oak Main Art Theater in Michigan. Drove there in my borrowed car, and was the only one in the theater. Not much has changed since then.

“Choose never learning from your own mistakes. Choose watching history repeat itself. Choose the slow reconciliation towards what you can get, rather than what you always hoped for…”

Before I knew it, I came across the end credits, at the very moment when the fireworks announced the new year outside the window. Just one last thought. We’re just a remix of what we used to be. That’s all.
