about Patrick Chappatte

Born in 1967, in Pakistan, to a Lebanese mother and a Swiss father, Patrick Chappatte was raised in Singapore and Geneva, and began to work for Swiss newspapers before moving to New York where he stayed for a few years, before moving to Los Angeles. He does reports made of cartoons, notably about the Ivory Coast rebels, Gaza and in the Elysée corridors, but also deals with issues such as our “Digital” or “Soccer” world and “Vacation Time”, always through his scathing irony.

Since 2003, Patrick has collaborated with editorial cartoonists in conflict-ridden countries with the goal of promoting dialogue through cartooning. In 2012, he becomes the first non-American person receiving the Thomas Nast Award given by the Overseas Press Club of America. He also co-founded with French cartoonist Plantu the Geneva-based “Cartooning for Peace” foundation, inspired by Kofi Annan, who was the organization’s honorary chairman until his death in August 2018. Every two years, the Swiss foundation awards an international prize recognizing a cartoonist for both his talent and his courage. In September 2016, it organized a Beethoven symphony in cartoons in Geneva concert hall.
