about Alicia Martin
Always a vehicle for transmitting culture and universality, books provide the daily work of Alicia Martin since the early 1990s. They are the raw material of which she made most of her works, giving them back powerful symbolic interpretations, a vision culminated in the large sculptures in which hundreds of books made big structures created ad hoc to a museum or exhibition. This is the case of her Biografias — Biographies — project that featured approximately 5,000 books which shoot out a window and sprawled out around and atop one another.
“I care for its universal character, anyone, regardless of age, culture, language sees a book and know what it is, and its essence anthropological and ergonomic. It’s an object that stores and records time and space. Witnessed the transition and human thought and built to be managed and somehow gives eternity to content. The book ‘is’ to read and has many readings as people who read it.”
Born in Madrid, Spain, in 1964, Alicia is one of the most important artist in Spain. She works in various disciplines such as sculpture, photography, video, drawing and installation.
