A fake job

about Gemma Correll

“Wtf. Worst cartoons ever!”
“I don’t understand this new illustration trend that’s…
just bad pen drawings…
at least put effort into things not pen doodles”

That’s pretty much what other people are saying about Gemma Correll’s work, or at least some impressions a witty illustrator like her choose to collect on her website. Maybe just a way to make clear that if you don’t like her drawing trend, there is no need to find the right words to tell her. They have already done so. Then Gemma gives a simple explanation of why her illustrations look like a five year old drew them: She just hires a five year old to do all her work for her. She pays him in fudge. His name is Alan. And in the end she thinks that illustrating is just a fake job. She actually runs a very successful drug smuggling ring and pretends to draw things and distract people with her cute pug.

Anyway, Gemma is a cartoonist, writer, illustrator and all-round small person. She’s the author of books like A Cat’s Life, A Pug’s Guide to Etiquette and The Worrier’s Guide to Life. She went to art school in Norwich, England and has a BA degree in Graphic Design specialising in Illustration. Her favourite colour is turquoise, her starsign is Aquarius and favourite word, Albuquerque.
