Someone like him

about István Nyári

When it comes to cultural education, an artist might reveal important, sensitive questions and give responses which cannot be expected from others in politics, churches nor from philosophers or aesthetes. This is what István Nyári thinks about the role of someone like him in our society. And as for economics, “there is no role to play”.

When he was 6-7 years old, he saw two painting easels. His parents were painting in a room next to each other, when suddenly one easel started to fall. His father kicked into it, his mother got extremely scared and pulled him away from the crashing death. They moved out the same day and István’s parents divorced soon after.

One day, when he was 16, he just was with a girl in his room. His drunk stepfather broke into there and attacked him and he got envy and tried to sexually seduced him. They got into a fight and the man was staggering out of István’s room, picked up his gun and was shouting that he would kill him. István had to knock him to the ground and get the gun out of his hand. This is what often happens to someone like him in our society.

István has finished his university studies as a graphic designer at the Hungarian University of Applied Arts in 1977. He has been working as a fine artist since 1978. Since 2007, he has been working in Budapest and London. He considers himself as a pop-surrealist artist.
