In the Greenhouse

about Susanne Ussing

Always fascinated by the feminine world, Susanne Ussing worked in a variety of different mediums, from photography and ceramics to large-scale installations and sensory exhibitions. Visual artist and architect from Denmark, in 1980 she made In the GreenhouseI Drivhuset —, one of her most impactful pieces, installed at the Ordrupgaard Museum in Copenhagen.

The sculpture depicts a female figure who has seemingly grown too large for — or has become trapped by — a very tall glass greenhouse. Constructed from newspaper clippings, wood, and metal chimney vents, the figure is so large that her feet seem to penetrate the brick floor below.

Born in 1940, one of Susanne’s last solo exhibition titled Susanne Ussing – An Exhibition In The Midstream Between Dream And Prosaic Reality, took place at Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Artdates in 2014. The retrospective presented a wide range of her work, making use of her photographic documentation and models of architectural experiments, which she called “manifesto buildings”. Susanne died in 1998.
