Split Moment

about Kyle Thompson

Mostly composed of self portraits, the images by Kyle Thompson show the collapse of narrative, as there is no defined story line with a beginning and end. They create a loop, in the background of empty forests and abandoned places. A nonexistent story line that only lives for a split moment, in a constant unchanging state. By diverting the view of the face, the images become more ambiguous, the viewer is no longer able to tie a defined story line to the image.

Kyle began taking photographs at the age of nineteen, after finding interest in nearby abandoned houses. Inspired by his childhood fight with depression, in 2015, he created his Ghost Town series as a means of understanding the sadness he felt in his earlier years.

“I was deeply depressed for nearly my entire childhood, and the images are meant to feel vacant and suffocating in that way. I wanted to capture these lonely and claustrophobic scenes. The sets are based on my childhood home, and items that felt relative or significant to me while growing up.

Born in Chicago on January 11th, 1992, today Kyle lives and works in Portland, OR.
