Nomadic Girl

about Kate Bellm

Not everyone can go beyond the conventional realms of the genre, following the nomadic, wild and romantic wings of inspiration. From underwater merbabes to technicolour rock formations, Kate Bellm captures the magical visions in which she seems to be wrapped, lightly. As often happens when a spirit manifests itself at an early stage, since she was a child she always loved to shoot her friends, dressing them up and making crazy settings for that. Over the years she got really inspired by photographers such as Guy Bourdin, Helmut Newton and David LaChapelle, but after a while it also turned into a more softer style.

Born in London, in 1987, with a background in fashion photography, Kate’s appreciation of the female form remains unchanged. But unlike the contrived poses of fashion models, the girls she shoots are free-spirited and adventurous, often framed within their natural environments.

About changes in the perception of photography due to social, and her absence from this whole digital age which somehow makes her feel like she’s always a step behind, she reiterates her perennial status as an outsider with that veil of nostalgia always surrounding her shoots.

“I constantly see everybody on their phones, addicted to Instagram and I do not want this important part of my life taken over by the computer. Where I would for example take pack of Polaroid and shoot it, people will just take a digital picture and upload it with a filter on. For me this basically destroys the real beauty of photography and the point where you are actually surprised of how it turned out.
