Unnatural Nature

about Erik Thor Sandberg

Grounded in humanism, Erik Thor Sandberg’s painting presents a compelling contemporary expression of how people connect with each other, nature and basic elements of life. Figures are placed in landscapes reminiscent of a dark fairy tale, fit for our wildest dreams. Tales that seem to surpass the confines of the subconscious and catapult us into a dreamland where humans and animals find themselves in confused situations, interacting in unnatural ways. Erik favors including animals in his work due to the classical and personal symbolic interpretations they evoke. Flaws and folly are brought to the forefront in the stories these pieces tell.

Born in Quantico, VA 1975, today Erik is known for his creating inventive imagery ranging from panoramic to intimate, and pushing the skillful illusionism of master painting to the contemporary edge of Magic Realism. His work has been exhibited at public and private venues internationally, including the Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD, and is in numerous private collections. He lives and works in Washington, DC.
