Alien Story

about Giacomo Costa

Convinced he was an extraterrestrial, Giacomo Costa created his first u-photomontage using a polaroid, in 1976, just to persuade his friends about his alien origins. Mountaineering enthusiast, in 1990 he began to photograph landscapes of mountains and then experiment with self-portraits and the study of his sexuality.

In 1994, he meets the Spanish photographer Richard Nieto who teaches him a particular technique that gives him the possibility to light up the subject with a mobile light spot turning into a real paint brush. After a long series of experimentations, in 1996, he comes across the computer and gets away from photographical reality, starting to build up his own artistic language.

A new kind of series will follow, this time with far more apocalyptic settings. In his Aqua and Secret Garden series, for example, he studied the natural environment gradually reclaiming the urban, man made landscape. While in Landscapes, Giacomo further investigates the relationship between man and nature, explaining that this series “represents the total defeat of nature which, having triumphed over man and having reclaimed its space, takes upon itself the indelible signs that the senseless behaviour of man left”.

Born in Florence in 1970, Giacomo believes that photography without a story to tell, and without a personal vision of the world, would be just an exercise of style and technique.
