Faceless Pause

about Patty Maher

We don’t know her face, but she seems to know so much things about us, that he chose to stay away from our noisy and crowded places for a bit. Just her way to convey emotion by using only posture, gesture, symbol and colour. The inspiration comes from all the “usual places” — art, nature music, poetry —, and from an exploration of storytelling in both natural and urban settings.

Patty Maher is a self-taught photographer who learned a lot from watching tutorials and just asking people. She regards photography as a means to take random or disconnected pieces of the world and frame them in a way that gives them new meaning, to constantly re-envision the world in new ways and to consider what the imagination has not yet described. The resulting photos are open-ended collaboration with the viewer.

“In the first instance I really just hope to say something to myself — to capture a feeling or notion outside of myself. If a photo works for me that way, I then hope it will work for others. So my larger hope would only extend as far as to put something positive or thought provoking into the world — that it might cause someone somewhere to pause, or perhaps see something differently.

Patty’s self-portraiture tells stories that explore the boundaries between the countryside outside her Toronto and the otherworldly, surreal and fantastical. Her photos have been published in Enquire Magazine and Rebel Imprint, among others. Some time ago, she moved to the north and currently resides in Caledon, Ontario, Canada.
