about André-François Barbe

André-François Barbe’s first illustrations were published in 1958 in Le Rire, then in Hara-Kiri, Charlie Mensuel and Pilote. After that, he worked for several French magazines, including Charlie Mensuel, Hara-Kiri, l’Écho des Savanes and Le Monde. Besides his work for the French market, he has worked for foreign magazines like Punch and Playboy. In addition to his comic career, André-François has created many press illustrations.

In the 1980s, at the initiative of his brother Michel Barbe, professor of history and geography in Marseille, he participated in a conference of Haroun Tazieff on volcanism. The quality of his graphics allows him to accompany, in 1982, a journey of exploration of scientists in the volcanic region of the Djibouti Rift. This expedition led by Maurice Taieb, co-discoverer of Lucy, mobilizes 32 professors who explore the basalt flows in the depression of Assal Lake. André-François died in Paris on 9 February 2014.
