about Mel Ramos

Along with Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, Mel Ramos was one of the first artists to do paintings of images from comic books, and works of the three were exhibited together at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1963. He received his first important recognition in the early 1960s, by producing art works that celebrates and parodies aspects of popular culture as represented in mass media.

Born in Sacramento, US, in 1935, Mel produces paintings, prints, sculptures and tapestries with his works often centering upon distinctive pin-up styled nudes situated against well-known brands and settings.

After graduating in 1958 from Sacramento State College with an M.A., Mel served as an artist-in-residence at Syracuse University in 1970 and at the University of Wisconsin in 1973. In 1986, he was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship Grant, along with being represented in major museum collections around the globe.

In 1955, Mel married Leta Ramos who was a model for many of his early paintings.
