about Nikolay Tolmachev

Since his early childhood, when his grandmother read him a book, Nikolay — Nicholas — Tolmachev let loose in his world made of bizarre images. Most of all, he liked history books. Once, another grandmother encouraged him to draw, so he started to paint subjects from nature and animals. Born in 1993, in Brovary, Ukraine, Nicholas never studied professionally.

He grew up in a simple family and has always a special place in his heart when remembering his grandmothers. Inspired by artists such as Sandro Botticelli, Antoine Watteau, de Sade, Charles Baudelaire or Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, he also did a lot of clay modeling.

Today, Nicholas believes that contemporary art does not have a unified style, and so every artist can find their own unique style to express his thoughts, his vision of the world. And this is what he makes. His own creativity develops in leaps depending on what he finds inspirational at that moment.

In 2013, independent French judges chose Nicholas among more than 500 participants in the project GRANT UART by the Foundation for cultural diplomacy UART. He became the winner of an educational grant that allowed him to study art in France, one of his reference homelands.
