Xifópagas Capilares

A project by Tunga

The degree of separation of the twins in utero depends on if and when they split into two zygotes. Dizygotic twins were always two zygotes. Monozygotic twins split into two zygotes at some time very early in the pregnancy. In very rare cases, twins become conjoined twins.

In the case of the 1984 performance Xifópagas Capilares Entre Nosotros — Capillary Siamese Twins —, by the Brazilian artist Tunga — best known for his fascinating sculptures, installations, videos, and performances, died June 2016 — the twins are connected by one long braided mass of hair, lurking in abandoned places out of the city. As in the project by Ariko Inaoka, but in a more disturbing way, Tunga seems to want to mark the feelings of alienation on the one hand, and the perception we have of everything that’s different on the other.
