Living Clay

about Johnson Tsang

There are hands that “give life” to material, make them experience feelings, crying and suffering, even from a cup of tea, or jumping for joy among the splashes of a pond. That make anyone children once again.
Johnson’s works mostly employ realist sculptural techniques accompanied by surrealist imagination. In 2002, he started to represent versatile splashes with ceramics. He created the Yuanyang series, which were then collected by the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the Yingge Ceramics Museum of Taiwan.

During the past decade, he continues to develop his techniques in capturing the instantaneous moment of splashes with white porcelain and stainless steel. In 2011 and 2012, his works, Bowls of Fantasy and Splash of Wonder, were awarded the Special Prize of Korea Gyeonggi International Ceramix Biennale 2011 International Competition and Grand Prize of 2012 Taiwan International Ceramics Biennale respectively. He is the first Chinese artist to have received both of these two prestigious international ceramics awards.

Apart from ceramics, Johnson has worked on stainless steel sculptures and public art projects since 2004. He has been commissioned by a number of private and public organizations.

Born in Hong Kong, in 1960, in 2009, he received “The Secretary for Home Affairs’ Commendation” from the Government of Hong Kong for his outstanding achievements in international art events. In 2016 he was included in Star Trek 50 Artist. 50 Years, global art exhibition commemorates Star Trek’s 50th anniversary with original 2D and 3D artwork by artists from around the world.

His blog is well documented, each stage caught in cool pics, so you just have to go on there and admiring the show of his hands at work.
