Pablo & Brigitte

Brigitte Bardot meets Pablo Picasso

In 1956, Brigitte Bardot attends the Cannes Film Festival, and takes that opportunity to visit the 74-year-old man, and living legend, Pablo Picasso, at his villa-studio in Vallauris, on the French Riviera, outside Cannes. The day seems perfect to take some photos too, so LIFE magazine decides to not miss that chance by sending Jerome Brierre there, with his camera — the pairing of the young and beautiful Bardot with the older Picasso, who was notorious for his affairs with much younger women, would make for a good story.

That moment would seem so good for the master to create another beautiful artwork ispired by the forms and details of that enchanting creature, but Picasso will never paint Brigitte, even if Lydia Corbett, one of Picasso’s frequent models at the time, will claim Bardot saw her at Cannes and adopted her blonde-haired, ponytailed look as her own.

Anyway, all that remains of that meeting is the wonder that still arouses by seeing two people like them — at the time the young actress already made 17 films dispite she was just 21 — so close, and the beautiful light that surrounds a day made of light chatter and smiles.
