I feel assured, that there is no such thing as ultimate forgetting. Traces once impressed upon the memory are indestructible.

Thomas De Quincey

In their Memories of Loss and Dreams of Perfection, psychiatrists Delmont Morrison and Shirley Morrison mention paracosms and “paracosmic fantasy” referring to those people who have suffered the loss of a loved one or some other tragedy in childhood. For such people, paracosms function as a way of processing and understanding their early loss. They cite authors as James M. Barrie, Isak Dinesen and Emily Brontë: they’d develop the experience of a paracosm during their childhood and over a long period of time.

Fortunately, our world seems to have honed an infallible remedy to protect itself from the past and losses, using them exclusively for practical purposes — see anniversaries, postcards, etc. —, creating new medicines and by encouraging next generation specialists.

We are living in days when everything is made to be consumed quickly and thrown away. Objects, emotions, relationships, feelings, nothing more has a good reason to persist over time. Business reigns, and along with it, a chaos without any human form.

The one recreated by Matthew, through his creative flea market is, on the contrary, a hypersensitive chaos, victim to a universal consciousness that is perhaps the only way to salvation. A story made on impulse and explained through objects created within a time frame that is chronologically disjointed.
