Dreaming by day

Melancholy is thus the most legitimate of all the poetical tones

Edgar Allan Poe

More and more artists, through their works, seem to reveal a charming need to be in bygone eras…

A love affair with the past is natural to me. There is romance in the things we cannot experience, and beauty in imagery of another time. It’s a world out of our need to escape.
There is a wealth of feeling, in the past, it comforts with sadness and joy. It asks our imagination to cultivate our own stories of real lives, as well as relating our own memories to those of others. For me all that I love to collect and paint into my images, even if a dream for the future, has at least one dangling foot in the past.

Isolation: the only way to learn to love people and their evolutions?

Best to come out of your cave once in a while.

One of your ordinary days in Norfolk:

I wake up with my little girl, at five, the day is a mixture since I’m a full time mum. There is entertainment whilst I prime a board, handing out an abundance of sticky tape while I wrap prints, and I sketch ideas with a red crayon across them. We wander a lot together, around town, which is good for day dreaming ideas. I make my painting when she is asleep, so it’s kettle on lamp on, and away until sleep beckons.

The female face: an ideal way to express every mood or simply one of the still interesting subjects?

It is a subject that never falters in interest to me, in its delicacy and form.

Between the following quotes, which one do you prefer?

1. “Melancholy is thus the most legitimate of all the poetical tones” — Edgar Allan Poe.
2. “Melancholy is as seductive as Ecstasy” — Mason Cooley.
3. “All men of genius are melancholy” — Aristotle

Edgar Allan Poe. His dark romanticism rings the same bells for me.

Art should always have a purpose, or you just have to be good?

For me it’s each to their own. Each of us is stuck by different imagery and styles, the purpose of a creator lies in the desire to bring something to life, whatever the level of skill.

Road Show + The Collector

How do you determine if someone — a painter, in this case — is a good artist?

He has his heart in it.

The social networks: a good thing or a trap for inspiration?

A time eater, that’s for sure. I find more inspiration in the things around me. It’s nice to see what others are creating, but best in small doses.

A memory from your past:

We were in the south of France, in Arles, I was 14 or 15. We had been at dinner at the Amphitheatre on a barmy light evening. I left them at the table and took a walk with my friend barefoot around the city and it didn’t hurt my feet on anything. I remember feeling such a sense of young freedom that everything was just as it should be for that moment in time.
