Art is a line around your thoughts

Gustav Klimt

Do you think everyone who is dedicated to art have so important thoughts to outline?

It’s subjective. If something resonates with one person and they’re determined to express that thoroughly and with complete honestly, there is bound to be at least one other person out there who feels the same. That’s enough.

What’s the secret of the butterfly which makes it one of the most inspiring insects ever?

I’ve always thought they were interesting because they’re normally associated with softness and frivolity in our culture, but in reality there’s actually something quite violent about the way they move and fly. If you ever sit and just watch them, you’ll see that they move very quickly and forcefully.

Is there a particular time of life in which you realize to be a little different from the rest of the people?

Hm… I don’t think I’m that different from everyone else. I’m just lucky enough to be able to draw my dreams and thoughts for a living.

As a human being, you can still look at the beauty without feeling guilty?

I think every artist struggles with their choice to make beauty, when there’s so much need in the world. I wrestled with it for a while. In a different life, I would have tried to be directly involved in fighting something like human trafficking.
But I think beauty is important, and art is important. They’re the small things that give joy in life. I’m absolutely terrible at everything else in life; hopeless at math, not the best writer, ineffective organizer.. Art is the only thing I truly know how to do. So, I try to contribute something small, at least the best I can.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of the artistic movement in New York City?

Well, I think there are a million different sub-movements occurring in the city at the moment, and all of them have their reasons for existing. Depending on each individual artist, the differing movements have both strengths and weaknesses for their individual goals. It’s an incredibly subjective thing.
I think it only gets dangerous when an artist lets the glitz, glamour, socializing, and opinions of those within their group influence the honesty within their work. It’s a very common thing, and its transparent and completely obvious when it happens.

The most suitable place to your inspiration:

A forest.

About your teaching experience, one of the fundamental lesson to gold leaf:

The memory of your childhood you’re most fond of:

Playing by the stream in my backyard as a kid, climbing trees and nearly anything high enough off the ground. I was a tomboy. I didn’t really “get” traditional gender roles and social cues early on, and was really just happily stuck in my own little world.
